What A1, A2, B1, B2 and C1 mean on this site

Every level here comes from a validated, published profile of Ukrainian vocabulary, not a guess or a model's prediction.

Level labels are everywhere and most of them are guesses. On this site every level is the one the PULS validated profile assigns (Профіль української лексики, Ukrainian Catholic University School of Ukrainian Language and Culture, 2026). Words PULS does not grade get no page here, rather than a predicted level.

The levels

  • [A1](/a1): First words: the ones a beginner meets in the first months, and the grammar words every sentence leans on.
  • [A2](/a2): Everyday life: shops, travel, family, time, the verbs that move a conversation along.
  • [B1](/b1): Independent use: news, opinions, work, the abstract nouns that show up once you start reading for real.
  • [B2](/b2): Wider reading: the vocabulary of articles, reports and argument.
  • [C1](/c1): Precision: lower-frequency words a fluent reader still needs.

Two cautions

  • PULS is a dated snapshot (2026-07-23), and the authors have not called it final. A level can move.
  • The PULS levels are licensed CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 at the authors' decision. That is why this site is free and carries no ads, and why anything built from it has to stay non-commercial.

The full crosswalk of PULS against the two published Borodin lexical minimums is in the open study.
